Making a Dream Home More Accessible — Case Study

The client’s stunning 2-story beach-inspired retirement townhouse was perfect when they bought it. Once they moved in, the new owners realized that they needed an elevator to make each of the floors in the 3-story condo more accessible for the family. The clients approached the ZMC Homes team to renovate their Clearwater home to update it and add the necessary accessibility features, such as an elevator, to make their dream home one they could safely stay in forever.

The key component of this update was adding the elevator to connect the 3-story home, but it isn’t as simple as just assembling a pre-fabricated elevator. It is a process that requires significant renovation to incorporate into the home’s floor plan.

We moved the laundry room from the second floor to the basement, built an elevator shaft, installed a residential elevator, cut concrete floors and floor joists, moved closets, and replaced flooring. It was important that the new elevator and the areas impacted by its addition look seamless, as if it was always a part of the home’s original construction.

The Benefits of a Fine Attention to Detail

Quality is a critical aspect of luxury homes, no matter the location or price. This means that every fine detail matters to contribute to the high-end look that we’re looking for. We wanted to add an elevator that wasn’t cheesy and look as if it was only there due to accessibility. An elevator that would add value and serve as an investment that matched the style of the rest of the home. When it came time for the elevator contractor to install the elevator in the shaft, the installer complimented us on the straightness and the structural quality of the elevator shaft we built.

Complete Kitchen Update

While we worked on transitioning the spaces to accommodate a residential elevator, we remodeled the entire kitchen. We were already there on-site and this created an opportunity for the clients to finally have the open concept kitchen they wanted. We ripped out walls, moved light fixtures, installed custom-made cabinets, luxury appliances, and a stunning quartz countertop. We also replaced windows and doors with impact-rated versions that better protected their investment from tropical storms and hurricanes.

In this case, it was more cost-effective to add an elevator to the home our clients loved than to find a new home that already had an elevator. It also had the benefit that the family gets to stay in their dream home instead of having to move somewhere new.
